Germany announces Euro 2024 squad in an unprecedented way

GERMANY - The squad list for Germany's participation in Euro 2024 has been gradually revealed over the past few days across various platforms, before being officially announced by coach Julian Nagelsmann at a press conference in Berlin on May 16th.

The German players selected for Euro 2024 have had their identities gradually revealed over the past few days on various platforms. Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck was announced on Tagesschau - Germany's oldest and most-watched news channel. Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah appeared on a cake presented by a caregiver and TikTok star Rashid Hamid to a 93-year-old woman known as "Bà Lotti".

Subsequently, a roofer and another social media influencer revealed goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. A major radio station announced Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, while the face of Stuttgart midfielder Chris Fuhrich appeared on a luggage tag at a bakery.

Whether they were YouTubers, podcasters, musicians, game show hosts, or even a portrait in an art gallery, the announcement of the Euro 2024 squad has been transmitted in a way that encompasses all fields, demographics, and reflects all walks of life in Germany.

"We want to emphasize that this is the home of the Euros," Nagelsmann said. "So, we gradually announce the squad list. We also noticed that the squad list is often leaked, so we address the issue this way. People in the country need to know about the national team. I think this announcement method is fantastic and emotional."

According to T-online, this new way of announcing the squad creates closeness and solidarity between the people and the German team ahead of the tournament held at home. Euro 2024 will take place from June 14th to July 14th in 10 cities across Germany, including Berlin, Dortmund, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, and Dusseldorf.

This new approach stands in stark contrast to the traditional method of announcing Germany's squad for major tournaments. Both the World Cup 2022 and Euro 2021 squads under Hansi Flick were announced in the conventional manner at official press conferences. For the World Cup 2018, Germany unveiled their squad at the National Football Museum in Dortmund, where giant Panini stickers were placed before being removed to reveal the 23 selected players.

Nagelsmann revealed the preliminary list of 27 German players on May 16th, excluding notable names such as Mats Hummels, Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyemi, Niklas Sule (Dortmund), Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry (Bayern), and Timo Werner (Tottenham). This list will be trimmed down to 26 players, with the latest deadline being June 7th. Nagelsmann confirmed that he will call up four goalkeepers, meaning one outfield player will be omitted.

Nagelsmann's team will assemble and begin preparations for the Euros in Blankenhain, central Germany, from May 26th to 31st, before moving to their base camp in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, on June 1st. The team will play friendly matches against Ukraine on June 3rd and Greece on June 7th before officially participating in Euro 2024, where they are placed in Group A alongside Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland.
